What’s targeted support?

It's normal to feel nervous or confused about taking the first step on your investment journey.

Targeted support is a new way for companies to help new investors. We’ll ask you a few questions about your goals and how you feel about risk. Then we’ll suggest a suitable investment. If it looks good to you, you can open an account and start growing your money.

Keep in mind that investors with similar characteristics will get the same suggestion (it won’t be unique to you).

At the moment, we can only offer targeted support to new clients.

Millions of people never invest their money. Often, a lack of investing knowledge holds them back, or they find the number of options on offer overwhelming. Using a financial adviser can be expensive, so this isn’t an option for everyone.

Targeted support has been designed to help make investing easier.

It’s a new service introduced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). It aims to bridge the gap between guidance and full, personalised advice.

Companies like us are allowed to ask you a few questions and make an investment recommendation based on what you tell us. For example, we’ll ask you about your goals and how you feel about risk. We then group people with similar characteristics and suggest a suitable fund.

We believe targeted support can encourage everyone to start their investment journey with confidence and understanding.

How it works

We’ll use your goals, preferences and target timeframe to group you with other similar investors.
We’ll suggest a fund
Our suggestion will be based on what you tell us and the range of ready-made funds we offer.
You become an investor
If our suggestion looks good to you, it’s time to open your account and start investing. You can start with a single contribution from £500 or a monthly from £100.

What’s a fund?

It’s common to think that when you invest, you’re buying shares with 1 or 2 big-name brands. At Vanguard, instead of investing directly in individual shares, investors invest in funds.

A fund is like a basket filled with thousands of different shares, bonds, or a mix of both. Some Vanguard funds contain more than 24,000 bonds and shares.

Investing in funds is usually less risky than investing in individual company shares. That’s because if you invest in a single company and its value falls, your investment will fall too.

Funds help to balance your investments – when 1 company’s performing poorly, others may be performing well. So your money’s better protected from market ups and downs over time.
